Over 99% of offshore fishing vessels in Vinh Long province install VMS
Since the beginning of 2024, Vinh Long has reported no violations of foreign waters or fishing beyond maritime boundaries, though 2,529 cases of VMS signal loss exceeding six hours were recorded in the first seven months of the year.

Vinh Long (VNA) - The Vinh Long provincial People’s Committee has inspected efforts to combat illegal, unreported and 🧜unregulated (IUU) fishing in 23 coastal communes and wards, aiming to address shortcomings ahead of the upcoming European Co🍎mmission (EC)'s inspection.
According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, Vinh Long currently has 4,652 registered fishing vessels, including 2,263 offshore fishing vessels, accounting for 48.65% of the total and 2,389 nearshore fishing vessels, comprising 51.35%, employing over 23,000 workers. To date, 2,241 vessels (99.03%) of the total, have installed vessel monitoring systems (VMS). The remaining 22 vessels, include two awaiting installation after relocating from other areas and 20 that are inactive due to damage.
Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Quynh Thien praised the communes and wards' efforts in IUU prevention but urged stronger measures to fully meet directions of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat, the Government and the Prime Minister. Authorities at all levels were instructed to intensify communication campaigns, step up inspections, especially targeting “three-no” vessels (unregistered, unlicensed, unmonitored) and ensure strict compliance with port entry and exit rules.
The province is also reinforcing communication campaigns to encourage responsible fishing, prevent violations of foreign waters, and safeguard maritime sovereignty. Communal authorities are tasked with monitoring vessels operating near maritime boundaries and coordinating with border guards to handle incidents at sea. Unregistered or non-operational vessels will be tightly controlled, with measures such as sealing equipment and publicly listing owners.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment confirmed strict adherence to national regulations on identifying high-risk vessels and continues working to meet all licensing and registration targets.

Ha emphasised that Vietnam must go beyond meeting the European Union (EU)'s requirements, and focus on unlocking the potential of the fisheries sector, safeguarding marine resources, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods of fishermen. The long-term goal is to maintain export momentum and uphold Vietnam’s reputation on the global seafood market.
Vietnam's fight against IUU fishing has made notable progress. Violations have been investigated, prosecuted, and brought to trial, creating a deterrent effect and raising awareness among coastal fishing communities.
Since April 2024, authorities in Ca Mau province have penalised 338 cases involving 391 fishing vessels, imposing fines totalling nearly 6 billion VND (230,900 USD).
From July 25 to August 16, citizens can register at cungvietnamtienbuoc.nhandan.vn and log their steps to make up “one billion steps into a new era.” The campaign fosters patriotism, public health, carbon reduction, and Vietnam’s net-zero goal.
