Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia’s Constitutional Court has recently ruled that national and local elections must be held separately starting in 2029.
The decision, issued on June 26, mandates that national-level elections for the House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Representative Council (DPD), and the presidency will no longer be held on the same day as local elections for regional legislatures and executive positions.
According to the Court, the separation is intended to improve election quality and simplify the process for voters in exercising their democratic rights.
In its legal considerations, the Court observed that scheduling presid🥀ential and legislative elections close to the regional head elections deprives voters of sufficient time to assess the performance of those elected nationally. Moreover, the combination tends to overshadow regional development issues with national political narratives./.
