Vietnam strives to ensure global goals on weather, climate, water resources

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Hoa Binh province, held a national-level ceremony in a hybrid format on March 23 in response to the World Water Day (March 22), the World Meteorological Day (March 23), and the Earth Hour 2023.

Hoa Binh (VNA) – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment(MoNRE), in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Hoa Binh province,held a national-level ceremony in a hybrid format on March 23 in response tothe World Water Day (March 22), the World Meteorological Day (March 23), andthe Earth Hour 2023.

Speaking at the event, MoNRE Deputy Minister Vo Tuan Nhansaid that climate change is considered a serious challenge for humanity in the21st century with negative impacts and threats to sustainable developmentactivities.

Climate change is causing more extreme weather and climate phenomena,prolonged heat waves with greater intensity, greater rainfall and more severedroughts, he stressed.

This year, the theme “Accelerating change” of the WorldWater Day, “The future of weather, climate, and water acrossgenerations” of the World Meteorological Day, and “The biggest hour forearth” of the Earth Hour are closely linked with one another in aspects ofenvironment, resources, ecology, Nhan stated, adding that weather, climate andwater cycle know no borders.

The above messages emphasise that it is time for changesto ensure global goals on weather, water resources, and climatechange; call on the international community to act and show their roles andresponsibilities in face of impacts of natural disasters and climatechange; and create a difference by changing the way water is used, exploited andmanaged in the daily life to minimise impacts of environmental degradation.

To spread these messages, the deputy minister proposedministries, sectors and localities unify actions; review and perfect the lawand policy system on resource management, environmental protection, and climatechange response; and codify the contents of international treaties and agreementsto which Vietnam is a member.

It is necessary to step up dissemination of laws related tohydro-meteorology, especially in areas vulnerable to extreme weather phenomena;manage the exploitation and effective use of water resources; and ensure watersecurity and safety of reservoirs and dams in service of socio-economicdevelopment, he stressed.

UNDP Resident Representative in Vietnam Ramla Khalidi saidthat it pledges to maintain effectivecooperation with the MoNRE, other ministries, sectors, local authorities, themedia and development partners to boost the implementation of necessaryactions, contributing to building a prosperous country in which no one is leftbehind./.

Vietnam ram♑ps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.

Hundreds of trees plante🐷d in Cuc Phuong National Park as part of Forestival

Renowned artists including Ha Anh Tuan, Den Vau, and Phan Manh Quynh, along with many directors and attendees, took part in planting hundreds of rare tree species such as mun (Diospyros mun) and cho chi (Parashorea chinensis) in the Thung Bong area of the Cuc Phuong National Park, contributing to forest ecosystem restoration.
