Hanoi (VNA) –Vietnam has been named in the top 10 countries for expatriate workers, accordingto HSBC’s Expat 2019 Global Report released on July 4.
For the first timein four years, Singapore is not the best destination for expatriate workers.Switzerland is now the top nation for those fortunate enough to be relocatedabroad by their employers - thanks to fast career progression, good pay, and“stunning scenery.”
The annual survey gathered data from 18,059overseas workers in 163 locations.Switzerland ranked high in quality of life, with 70 percent of expats basedthere saying it had a better natural environment than their home nations, comparedto a global average of 40 percent for all expats. Respondents also highlightedthe country’s low crime rate and its economic and political stability, factorswhich helped push the country’s ranking from the number eight to number onespot this year.
Though employees relocating toSwitzerland can enjoy on average a healthy paycheck of 111,587 USD a year, farabove the 75,966 USD global average for expats, it trails places like Shanghaiand Dubai, where expats can earn between 140,000USD and 150,000 USD on average.
The survey breaks the findings intothree sub-categories: living, career opportunity, and family life. Canada topsthe list in the first category, with respondents saying it’s a welcomingcountry, followed by Spain where expats praise its relaxed Mediterranean vibe.Switzerland scores high on career opportunity, thanks in part to quickerpromotions, and Singapore tops the list for family life due to the availabilityof high-quality schools.
It’s important to remember theseresults apply to expats - people that are generally more affluent and educatedthan local populations, and in particular immigrants from poor countries.Unlike other categories of migrants, expats generally live abroad on atemporary basis, and many have some or all expenses paid by their employers.
HSBC is clear that its survey isspecific to expats only - as are other, similarrankings done by Mercer and theEconomist Intelligence Unit - even if news reports covering the rankings readthem as an overall verdict on general populations.
The top ten countries includeSwitzerland, Singapore, Canada, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Germany, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Vietnam.-VNA
