Vietnam calls for multilateral cooperation at Non-Aligned Movement meeting

Hanoi, (VNA) – Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai, head of the Vietnamese delegation to the High-Level Commemorative Meeting to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), hascalled on NAM members to enhance multilateral cooperation at both global and regional levels to raise thevoice of the NAM in the international arena.
Mai, who is head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the UN,World Trade Organisation (WTO) and other international organisations in Geneva,made the call when addressing the NAM high-level meeting, which was held on October 11 and 12 and gathered 500delegates from over 100 member states.
The ambassador took the occasion to congratulate the NAM for playing an important role in internationalrelations and raising a strong voice in support of the interests and aspirations ofmankind towards a peaceful, prosperous, democratic, equal and sustainableworld.
Given different challenges facing NAM, including resourcesand territorial disputes among nations as well as an economic downturn and deepersocial inequality due to COVID-19, Mai called on member countries to step up globaland regional multilateral cooperation in contribution to the peaceful settlementof international disputes and ensuring equitable access to COVID-19 vaccinesand medicines towards an inclusive and sustainable recovery after the pandemic.
The diplomat stressed the role of the Association ofSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in maintaining and promoting security in theregion.
She affirmed that as a responsible member of NAM, ASEAN, andthe UN Security Council, Vietnam always upholds the movement’s goals andprinciples in promoting peace, stability and sustainable development,especially maintaining maritime security and safety in the East Sea in accordancewith international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on theLaw of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Participating member nations stated NAM is one of thelargest multilateral forums representing the voices of developing countries inthe current context of a changing world.
Highlighting such challenges as the COVID-19 and inequalityin vaccine access, they urged the promotion of multilateralism in response to thepandemic and regarding international relations in general./.
