UK-funded dengue forecasting system introduced in Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) – The UNDevelopment Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and HRWallingford company on March 19 launched a pioneering dengue forecasting systemin Vietnam, hoping to curb the spread of this disease in the country.
The D-MOSS project, funded by the UK Space Agency and is led by the HRWallingford -- a British civil engineering and environmental hydraulicsconsultancy, will be implemented in Hanoi and Khanh Hoa, Dak Lak and Dong Naiprovinces during 2019-2021. It uses acombination of satellite information, weather forecasting and historical dataon previous outbreaks to create an early warning system for potential denguedanger zones.
At the launchingceremony, Kamal Malhotra, UN ResidentCoordinator in Vietnam, described the project as a wonderful initiative whichhelps Vietnamese health sector to combat dengue fever’s impacts.
Highlighting the UK’s strength in space technology, UK Ambassador to VietnamGareth Ward expressed his delight to see the Space Agency and its partnersintroduce a new tool to help Vietnam predict and respond to the dengue outbreakin a more precise and effective manner.
The project is a vivid illustration for the UK’s commitment to supportingVietnam to realise the UN’s Millennium Goals, he added.
Denguefever is a periodic disease in Vietnam. It has close relations to rapidurbanisation process, environmental pollution, climate change, and poor accessto basic services. In 2017, the country suffered a major outbreak with morethan 170,000 dengue cases.-VNA
The southern province of Dong Nai has reported the second death from dengue fever, Director of the provincial Preventive Medicine Centre Bach Thai Binh said on September 8.
Hanoi has reported 955 cases of dengue fever in 261 communes, wards and towns across its 30 districts from the outset of the year, a year-on-year decrease of 96.8 percent.
Hanoi has continued to apply measures to prevent and control the spread of common diseases, especially dengue fever which is currently in its peak season.

The number of dengue fever cases in Ho Chi Minh City in the first seven weeks of 2019 surged by nearly 250 percent over the same period last year, reported the city’s Preventive Medicine Centre.
