Vice Chairman of the provincial People’sCommittee Nguyen Van Phuong said in addition to the State’s forest protectionand development policies, the province has promulgated other support policiesto encourage small-scale households to develop forestation towardssustainability and certification.
He said Thua Thien-Hue hopes to continuereceiving technical assistance from the Vietnamese chapter of the World WideFund for Nature (WWF-Vietnam) to effectively implement activities preserving naturalresources, biodiversity, and developing the forest value chain according to theforest certification of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Thua Thien-Hue has a natural wildlife area ofover 502,600 ha, including more than 348,800 ha of forested land. The currentforest coverage is 56.3 percent.
The province is striving to develop over 16,000 haof large timber forests by 2020, of which at least 5,000-9,000 ha of forests arehoped to receive the FSC certification.
So far, nearly 3,900 ha of forests have received this certification. –VNA
Vietnam planted a total 12,385ha of coastal forest between 2015-2017 via climate change response and coastal forest protection project for 2015-2020, which raised the coastal forest coverage from 16.9 percent in 2014 to 17 percent last year.
Vietnam earns more than 9.3 billion USD from the export of forestry products in 2018, up 15.9 percent from last year, according to the Vietnam Administration of Forestry (VNFOREST).
The forestry sector will support the issuance of sustainable forest management certificates on an area of 100,000ha per year as part of efforts to ensure that Vietnamese wood products satisfy all international requirements as the country joins free trade agreements.
