Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam Nguyen Van Binh has underscored the role of former Prime Minister of Great Britain and North Ireland Tony Blair and his namesake office in developing the Vietnam – UK strategic partnership.
During a reception in Hanoi on October 19, Binh said the Office of Tony Blair has provided practical and valuable assistance to the Vietnamese Government in strategic areas, including foreign investment attraction, public-private partnership frameworks and of State-owned enterprise reform.
He also hailed the office for pledging to attend and deliver a speech at the seminar “Vietnam becomes a new processing and engineering hub of the world after 2015” slated for October 24 in Hanoi.
The former PM spoke highly of Vietnam’s positive achievements in macro-economic stability and reform, particularly in the banking sector. He said he was optimistic about Vietnam’s economic prospects in light of its membership in the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Vietnam-EU free trade agreement.
Both sides stressed the need to accelerate economic restructuring with a focus on the finance-banking sector in order to stimulate economic development for the next five years and beyond.
They agreed to work closely in experience sharing, reform, global economic integration and financial market development.
The two sides will help small- and medium-sized enterprises improve their approach to financial access while continuing to restructure commercial banks and strengthen country competitiveness in the region.-VNA

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair suggested Vietnam take advantage of multilateral cooperative mechanisms, restructure State-owned enterprises, attract foreign investment and boost public-private partnership at a seminar in Hanoi on March 4.
The official visit to Vietnam by Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) David Cameron from July 29-30, the first-ever by a British Prime Minister, is expected to intensify and deepen the two countries’ strategic partnership that has grown in recent years.
Vietnam and the UK set up their diplomatic ties on September 11, 1973. In 2010, the two nations decided to establish a strategic partnership, focusing on seven cooperative areas, namely politics-diplomacy, regional and global issues, trade and investment, development cooperation, education-training and science-technology, security-defence, and people-to-people exchange.
At the working session, General Secretary Lam presented the Party Committee of the VFF and central mass organisations with the Politburo’s Decision No. 304-QD/TW, which outlines the new structure, functions and tasks of the VFF Central Committee, marking a significant step in improving its organisational effectiveness.
Describing the exhibition as a large-scaled, content-rich, and unprecedented event with high requirements and limited preparation time, PM Pham Minh Chinh urged all ministries, sectors, and localities to participate with the highest sense of responsibility, ensuring the exhibition is inclusive, objective, truthful, feasible, and impactful.
Vietnam’s attendance reaffirms its consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralisation and diversification, and comprehensive, intensive, extensive and effective international integration.
Cheng stressed that this is third time PM Chinh has attended the meeting and he is among the few senior government officials participating in this year's event, which is considered as a rare and commendable gesture.
The fact that the Vietnamese PM has been invited to attend and speak at this important event for three consecutive years reflects the WEF as well as the international business community's recognition and high regard for Vietnam's position, role, and contributions to global and regional economic growth.
