School psychology comes under spotlight in Dong Nai

Dong Nai (VNA) – The Education andTraining Department of the southern province of Dong Nai held a seminar on schoolpsychology on June 12 with a view to increasing psychological consultation forstudents at schools.
Hoang Mai Lan, vice rector of the Tam Hiep seniorhigh school in Bien Hoa city, said students undergoing adolescence withoutadults’ advices and guidance are likely to lose direction in life and trust inothers, and behave negatively.
She said her school ran a survey on studentbehaviour and found that many did not have confidence in themselves.
The Tan Hiep high school has held talks onschool violence, gender, and career orientation, and set up a psychologicalconsultation room to offer psychological consultation for students.
Le Minh Cong, deputy head of the provincialassociation of psychological education science, said many local schools haveestablished consultation teams, but as members are mostly teachers, thesegroups cannot solve all problems and their main function remains at preventionlevel.
In recent years, a number of school pilotedmore professional groups with the involvement of specialists, which proved tobe more effective and suitable to local conditions.
Dong Nai has 30 out of 68 high schools and100 percent of primary and secondary schools establishing consultation groups.
The provincial Department of Education andTraining said it is paying attention to the matter and will direct school to reviewthe operation of their psychological teams.
The agency plans to work with universities togive training to local teachers on the issue.
It will also invite more experiencedpsychologists to visit local schools, training teachers and offering advice tostudents.-VNA
An international conference on school psychology opened in the central city of Da Nang on July 28, attracting the participation of over 300 scientists and school psychologists from the US.
About 80 percent of students have problems that they want to share with others and want a private space in the school to seek help and talk about their problems, according to the Ministry of Education and Training’s surveys conducted in Hanoi and Hai Duong.
