Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – With its capacity of approaching people from all walks of lifeꦐ, the press is responsible for and plays an important role in popularising information about the ASEAN Community, opportunities brought by it and challenges facing it during the changing regional and international situations.
ASEAN General Secretary Le Luong Minh made the statement at his dialogue session during the 4th Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) Editors' Roundtable on 'ASEAN Community Post-2015 Vision, which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on December 4.
According to Minh, at present, people’s awareness of the community and the ASEAN Vision 2025 remained limited.
Therefore, acknowledging the importance of communications, ASEAN approved a communications plan last year and will issue a special publication on the community in all its 10 member states on December 31, when the community is formed.
The association plans to broadcast a weekly 30-minute TV programme in the countries to provide the public with necessary information about the community, he said.
At the roundtable, participating journalists, editors and researchers also discussed the role of the press in promoting the moderation among ASEAN and East Asian nations.
The ASEAN Community is set to be established on December 31 with the three pillars of the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC), the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC).-VNA
