Int’l conference to be held to improve Vietnam’s peacekeeping capacity
Vietnam and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will chair an international conference in early September, aiming to improve the country’s capacity of taking part in UN peacekeeping activities.

Hanoi (VNA) –Vietnam and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will chair aninternational conference in early September, aiming to improve the country’scapacity of taking part in UN peacekeeping activities.
The information was released by a representativeof the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) while talking toforeign military attachés who visited the department on July 19, Quan doi Nhandan (People’s Army) newspaper reported.
The attachés learned about the development ofthe DPKO as well as the country’s participation in United Nations peacekeepingactivities in recent years.
On behalf of the delegation, Defence Attaché ofSouth Africa Mpiwa Kgotso Abiel lauded Vietnam’s effective participation in UNpeacekeeping activities. He also congratulated the DPKO on being chosen as atraining site for UN peacekeeping forces within the framework of the tripartilepartnership programme.
The attachés also discussed peacekeepingcooperation with Vietnam in the future.
The DPKO, previously the Vietnam PeacekeepingCentre, opened in 2014.
Since then, the country has sent 20 officers tothe UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central AfricanRepublic and the UN Mission in South Sudan. It is preparing to deploy a level-2field hospital to South Sudan.-VNA
A military delegation of Russia led by Lieut. Gen. Kuralenko Sergey Vasilievich, Deputy Commander-in-chief for Peacekeeping Operations of the Russian Ground Forces, visited the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department (VPD) in Hanoi on June 15.
Vietnam is actively preparing to send its policemen to UN peacekeeping missions, said Lieut. Gen. Tran Van Ve, Acting General Director of the General Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, at the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS) that took place in New York on June 21.
Vietnam is among four countries in Southeast Asia selected to be the training sites for the UN peacekeeping forces, with the first training course to be held in Vietnam at the end of this year.
The selection of Vietnam as a training site for UN peacekeeping forces in ASEAN demonstrates the UN’s high evaluation for Vietnam’s activeness and capacity to contribute to UN peacekeeping activities, said a military officer.
The Vietnam Department of Peace-keeping Operations launched a training course in Hanoi on July 16 for military experts dispatched to the United Nations peace-keeping mission.
The State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (SCOVA) has served as a bridge connecting and uniting the community with the homeland, becoming a trusted source of support for Vietnamese expats in times of hardship.
The programme to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses has achieved notable results, with nearly 263,000 housing units addressed to date, including 225,000 houses inaugurated and 38,000 under construction. Thirty-eight provinces and cities across the nation have already fulfilled their targets.
Stronger efforts and determination are required to achieve and surpass the set targets, especially in the eradication of makeshift and dilapidated houses nationwide, the acceleration of public investment disbursement, and the implementation of nationally important transport projects, PM Pham Minh Chinh noted.
The trip will be made at the invitations of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and WEF President and CEO Børge Brende, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Long spoke highly of the dynamic, positive, and comprehensive development of Vietnam – Russia relations in recent years. The show, together with a grand parade to be held silmutaneously at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution, the National Day, and the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA).
In particular, in April 2023, the two sides successfully carried out a joint operation that dismantled a major organised, transnational drug trafficking ring involving both Vietnamese and Cambodian suspects.
