HCM City (VNA) – The southern province of Dong Nai has asked the Government to extend a HCM City metro route and expansion of several expressways to enhance transport connections in the southern economic z꧙one.
The province’s People’s Committee has asked that the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro route, now under construction, be extended 4.7 kilometres to reach the Vung Tau intersection in Bien Hoa City in Dong Nai Province.
Tran Van Vinh, Vice Chairman of Dong Nai’s People’s Committee, said the extension of the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro route to Vung Tau intersection in Bien Hoa City should be approved to increase efficiency and resolve traffic jams near the eastern gateway of HCM City.
The 29 industrial parks in the province employ a large number of labourers and experts who live in HCM City and travel regularly between the two areas.
More than 1 million people live in Bien Hoa City. Heavy traffic density and jams are often reported.
HCM City’s transport development plan for the 2020-30 period, approved by the Prime Minister, mentioned the possibility of the metro being extended to Bien Hoa City in Dong Nai, instead of the initially proposed final stop at HCM City’s Suoi Tien Park in District 9.
The HCM City Metro project is managed by the city’s Management Authority for Urban Railways under the chairman of the People’s Committee.
The metro was first proposed in 2001 as part of a comprehensive public transport network plan including HCM City and neighbouring provinces, with the aim of avoiding severe traffic congestion.
It includes three monorail lines with a total length of 37km and six underground metro routes of 107km in total length.
Road expansion Dong Nai Province has also proposed expanding National Road 1 (the section in Dong Nai Province) to four lanes, including construction of a fence in the middle of the road to ensure traffic safety.
To prevent traffic congestion, the province wants to build a 6.2-km road at Long Khanh Commune as a substitute for the National Road 1 section.
It also has asked the government to speed up approval of extension of expressways that would connect to Long Thanh International Airport (expected to open in 2025). This includes the Dau Giay-Phan Thiet expressway and Bien Hoa-Vung Tau expressway, among others.-VNA
After Dong Nai Province, it is now the turn of Binh Duong to seek extension of HCM City’s first metro route from Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien so that it can reach the province’s My Phuoc-Tan Van Road.
Ho Chi Minh City will speed up the implementation of the Metro Line No. 2 project, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Dinh La Thang has affirmed.
