Former director of AIC sentenced to 30 years of imprisonment for bribery
The Hanoi People’s Court on January 4 passed sentences against 36 defendants for violations related to equipment procurement bidding packages for a hospital project at Dong Nai General Hospital.
Hanoi (VNA) - The HanoiPeople’s Court on January 4 passed sentences against 36 defendants forviolations related to equipment procurement bidding packages for a hospital projectat Dong Nai General Hospital.
Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan, 54,former chairwoman and general director of the Hanoi-based AdvancedInternational Joint Stock Company (AIC Group), was sentenced in absentia to 30years of imprisonment for "violating regulations on bidding, causingserious consequences" and "giving bribes" specified in Clause 3,Article 222 and Clause 4, Article 364 of the Penal Code.
The trial said that Nhan hadfled abroad, and the investigating agency issued a special international arrestwarrant but to no avail.
Tran Manh Ha, 52, deputy generaldirector of AIC, received 25 years in prison for the same crimes.
Tran Dinh Thanh, 68, formersecretary of the Party Committee of Dong Nai province, and Dinh Quoc Thai, 64,former chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Nai province, were sentencedto 11 years and nine years of imprisonment for the crime of "receivingbribes", specified in points a and b, Clause 4, Article 354 of the PenalCode, respectively.
Phan Huy Anh Vu, 56, formerdirector of Dong Nai General Hospital and director of Dong Nai province'sDepartment of Health, received 19 years in prison for "violatingregulations on bidding, causing serious consequences" and "receivingbribes".
Bo Ngoc Thu, 63, former directorof the Department of Planning and Investment of Dong Nai province, receivedthree years and six months in prison for "abusing positions and powerswhile performing official duties".
Other defendants receivedsentences from 30 months’ probation to six years and six months in prison for"violating regulations on bidding, causing serious consequences" and"lacking responsibilities leading to serious consequences".
According to the indictment, inearly 2013, when the provincial People's Committee approved Dong Nai Hospitalto hire a consultant to adjust the list of specialised medical equipment, Nhandirected many subordinates to collude with investors, consulting units, andcompanies to ensure that AIC won the bid.
As a result, the AIC company won16 packages of medical equipment and construction and installation at theproject with a total amount of more than 665.7 billion VND (28.4 million USD),illegally making more than 148 billion VND (6.3 million USD) in profit andcausing serious damage to State property.
The indictment determined thatto win medical equipment packages at the Dong Nai Hospital Project, Nhan hasspent more than 43 billion VND (1.8 million USD) bribing Tran Dinh Thanh, DinhQuoc Thai and Phan Huy Anh Vu./.
Former Secretary of the Party Committee of the southern province of Binh Duong Tran Van Nam and former Chairman of the province’s People’s Committee Tran Thanh Liem were sentenced to 7 years in prison each for their role in a case of violations of land management and use regulations in Binh Duong.
Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan, Chairwoman and General Director of the Advanced International Joint Stock Company (AIC), and 35 others will be brought to trial on December 21 for their accused involvement in wrongdoings at the Dong Nai General Hospital, the AIC, and some others.

At a review conference held on June 21, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Van Sinh praised the province’s scientific, coordinated, and flexible approach. He noted that the early completion reflects the strong commitment of local authorities, the business community, philanthropists, and residents in improving housing conditions for disadvantaged groups.
