Concrete mixer truck-coach crash kills 13 in Lai Chau
Thirteen people were killed and three others were injured severely after a concrete mixer truck crashed into a passenger coach in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau on September 15.
Lai Chau (VNA) - Thirteen people were killed and three others wereinjured severely after a concrete mixer truck crashed into a passenger coach inthe northern mountainous province of Lai Chau on September 15.
The accident occurred at 9:30am on National Highway4D in Tam Duong district when the concrete mixer truck hit the back of thepassenger coach carrying 15 people while driving down a pass. Both vehicles werethrown into a stream 10 meters off the road.
Twelve people, including both drivers, were killedon the spot and a child died on the way to the hospital. The three others sufferedheavy injuries and have been taken to the Lai Chau General Hospital.
After being informed of the accident, Deputy PrimeMinister Truong Hoa Binh, who is Chairman of the National Committee for TrafficSafety (NCTS), sent his profound sympathy to families of the deceased, and hisencouragement to the injured.
He assigned the NCTS’s Vice Chairman Khuat VietHung, Deputy Minister of Transport Le Dinh Tho, and leaders of the Ministry ofTransport’s units to go to the site to address the accident’s consequences.
Binh also asked Lai Chau province’s People’sCommittee to visit the injured victims and provide assistance for the familiesof the deceased.
The provincial health sector was requested to focusresources on treating the injured.
Statistics released previously by the NTSC showedthat the number of road traffic accidents, traffic-related deaths and injuriesin Vietnam dropped in the first eight months of this year, compared with thesame period last year.
About 11,782 road accidents were reported nationwidein the reviewed period, killing 5,366 people and injuring about 9,200 others.
The number of traffic accidents was 7.77 percentlower than that of last year, while the number of deaths and injuries droppedby 1.03 percent and 12.66 percent, respectively.
In August alone, there were 1,432 accidents, killing650 people and wounding 1,094 others, down 10.67 percent, 1.66 percent and15.72 percent, respectively, against the same period last year.-VNA

Two pilots were killed when a military aircraft of the Air Defence-Air Force Service went down in Nghia Dan district of central Nghe An province around noon of July 26.

At a review conference held on June 21, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Van Sinh praised the province’s scientific, coordinated, and flexible approach. He noted that the early completion reflects the strong commitment of local authorities, the business community, philanthropists, and residents in improving housing conditions for disadvantaged groups.
