As many as 40 children with genetic facial defects received surgical operations during a programme held in Vietnam’s central provinces from July 14-20.

The programme was organised by a delegationof experts from the Republic of Korea’s (RoK) Chonbuk National University, andHue University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hue UMP) Hospital. It provided freeoral and maxillofacial surgeries for 28 children out of the kids. Following the surgeries, the young patients receivedtreatment at a centre for phonetic placement therapy at the Hue UniversityHospital. The programme alsosupported travel and food costs for the patients. On this occasion, doctors also offered medicalchecks-up for patients who received surgeries during last year’s programme. The Hue UMP and the Chunbok NationalUniversity have enjoyed sound cooperation for more than 14 years, said DoctorTran Tan Tai, head of the Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology at the Hue UniversityHospital. To date, the programme has treated more than400 children with facial defects in Vietnam’s central region, with about 350 ofthem receiving free cleft lip surgeries. The programme also offersopportunities for doctors of Vietnam and the RoK to share their experiences andimprove their skills, he added. In addition, the two universities have forgedcooperation in many areas, including training and scientific research, grantsfor medical students, and admission of Hue UMP’s trainees to the RoKuniversity, along with the establishment of a phonetic placement therapy centrefor young patients, the first of its kind in the central and Central Highlandsregions.-VNA
