Bauxite projects contribute to Central Highlands’ development: PM
Two pilot bauxite projects in Lam Dong and Dak Nong provinces have significantly contributed to the Central Highlands' development in recent years, which is a premise to consider the expansion of bauxite exploitation and processing in the region, said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at a meeting in Hanoi on April 16.
Hanoi (VNA) - Twoꦺ pilotbauxite projects in Lam Dong and Dak Nong provinces have significantlycontributed to the Central Highlands' development in recent years, which is apremise to consider the expansion of bauxite exploitation andprocessing in the region, said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at a meeting inHanoi on April 16.
The meeting aims to review the 10-yearimplementation of the Politburo’s conclusion on planning, zoning off forexploration, exploitation and processing of bauxite ore during the 2007-2015 period, witha vision to 2025. The Tan Rai and Nhan Co bauxite exploitation and processing projects in Lam Dong and Dak Nong provinces started work in 2008 and 2010, respectively. They have earned profits since 2017, one year ahead of schedule. The per capita income of local residents has increased to 65 million VND (2,775 USD) per year at present from 17 million VND (725.9 USD) before 2007, the meeting heard.
PM Phuc said that in the future, if thealuminum industry is developed based on the two projects, it must be closely linked to the market in order to ensure economic efficiency bymobilising potential businesses in various sectors to jointly invest in projects.
Besides roads, it is necessary to study thedevelopment of other ways of transportation from the aluminum factories in theCentral Highlands to seaports, as well as promote the application of newtechnologies to treat red mud (bauxite residue after alumina has beenextracted), PM Phuc said.
He emphaꦓsised that to ensure sustainabledevelopment of the aluminum and aluminium smelting industry, specialattention must be paid to environmental protection, security aꦆnd defence,social order and safety, and particularly protecting the living environment forCentral Highland people, including mountains, forests, water, air and uniqueculture of ethnic minorities./.
The Nhan Co alumina plant in Dak Nong province is expected to stimulate economic development in southern Central Highlands in general and in Dak Nong in particular.
