The number of traffic accidents during the four-day National Day holiday fell 9.82% year-on-year to 257, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

Thirty-one traffic accidents occurred, killing 23 and injuring 15 others on January 23 (the 29th day of the 12th lunar month), the first day of the week-long Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.

Poor management in some localities is allowing overloaded trucks to damage roads, according to the latest report by Directorate for Roads of Vietnam.

People who are found to be drunk while driving would have their driving licences revoked permanently under a new proposal by the Ministry of Public Security, said a senior police officer.

Traffic police across the country revoked some 9,800 driving licences from September 21 to November 20, 2018.

The Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security has considered proposing a demerit point system to tackle driving offences.

As many as 29 people were killed while 32 others were injured in 34 road accidents on December 30, the first day of the three-day 2018 Calendar New Year holiday, said the Ministry of Public Security.

Drivers can send applications for driving licences and receive the licences via post, instead of having to submit the applications personally as at present.

During the first three days of 2016, there were 124 traffic accidents and 65 fatalities, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.

Road accidents and fatalities have dropped this year, according to statistics from the National Committee of Traffic Safety.

International driving permits are issued to both Vietnamese and foreign residents starting from November 3, after a delay of more than one month.
